I’m ecstatic to announce that my story “Fun City” has won the Flyway Sweet Corn Prize!
Flyway will publish the story in its Summer 2018 issue. This story is especially close to my heart because it captures the Ocean City, Md., boardwalk that I grew up with in the 90s and early aughts. From cigarette butts in the arcade to sun-bronzed bikini babes to saving quarters for ice cream from the McDonald’s drive-thru, I poured a lot of sensory childhood experiences into this piece. There are facets of myself in its narrator, Sam, as well. I can’t wait for you to meet her when the story is published. (You can follow the magazine for details.)

I’m recovering from a wonderful weekend at the Nebula Awards, where I cheered on friends and superstars in every category. If you are looking for some amazing examples of work in my favorite genres, check out the nominee slate and buy some books! (You can also find many of the shorter works online for free.)
My next stop is Seattle for the summer, where I’ll be working for the Clarion West Writers Workshop. I can’t wait to get to know the Class of 2018 and meet this year’s lineup of instructors. It’s going to be great!
If anyone wants to catch me in person on the East Coast, my next big con will be the World Fantasy Convention in Baltimore this fall.
Cheers!
